Bird walk

The Plettenberg Bay Country Club was closed for maintenance work which enabled the Plettenberg Bay Bird Club to do some birding on the golf course without the fear of errant golf balls. Shirley and I decided to join them, for Shirley a chance to see a wider variety of South African birds and for me a chance to scrub up my bird ID with the help of experienced minds. It turned out to be a most enjoyable morning ramble! There was a small group to start with which slowly grew as late comers joined us. We slowly walked along, peering into the forest undergrowth and into the trees dotted around the course. We had moments of silence to listen to a bird call, which was occasionally debated and then out whipped the various electronic devices with either Roberts or Sasol ebooks along with the bird calls. At times said devices were used to attempt to call a bird out of the bush into the open, and from this we had a most spectacular sighting of a Chorister Robin-Chat. Also on the walk we saw a good many Knysna Turacos, a spectacular sight! Other birds seen include Dusky Flycatcher, Black-headed Oriole, Southern Double-collared Sunbird, Greater Double-collared Sunbird, Fork-tailed Drongo, Lemon Dove, Hadedah Ibis, Sacred Ibis, Sombre Greenbul and Jackal Buzzard.
